Welcome! Higher education has been abuzz with world like ChatGPT, machine learning, and large language models. So, what is generative artificial intelligence, or genA.I., and what are the implications of these technologies for faculty and students? In this guide, you will find information you need to better understand the evolving role of genA.I. in teaching and learning in higher education.

In this resource, we will start with information you need to understand the basics of these genA.I. technologies, including their limitations and risks, and specific implications for classrooms in higher ed.

The middle section will prompt you to think about how to talk with your students about artificial intelligence—when and when not to use it, how to use it responsibly. We’ll then move into considerations for designing assessments with generative A.I. in mind.

The final chapters of the book will delve into more general topics, although still applicable to student learning, assessment, and experience. These include the ethical and social aspects of genA.I., a review of popular tools, and a listing of further readings and resources.
